Mount Druitt grew rapidly as the centre of 1960s and 70s NSW Housing Commission estates, and much of the housing stock along Carlisle Avenue and Luxford Road dates straight back to that era: brick-veneer and fibro project homes now mixed with newer townhouse infill on subdivided blocks.

That building history matters for plumbing more than almost anything else about the suburb. Original hot water systems and supply pipes from the Housing Commission era are decades past a normal service life, and they tend to fail without much warning.

Sitting on the flat Cumberland Plain between South Creek and Ropes Creek, the clay soil here drains slowly, and heavy summer storms can surcharge gully traps and sewer lines faster than in hillier suburbs nearby.

Later infill townhouses near the station bring their own pattern too, with shared hot water systems meaning one failure can leave more than one household without hot water at once.

Because so much of this stock went up within the same handful of years, the original taps, valves and connectors are running out of road together, not just the hot water units.

This suburb is part of our regular run, not somewhere we occasionally stretch to. Carlisle Avenue, Luxford Road and the Housing Commission-era housing that lines them are territory we know well.

Between Westfield, the hospital on Railway Street and the TAFE campus, this end of Blacktown has plenty going on, and plenty of ageing infrastructure to match. We're not learning the streets on the job.
